How to Toast and Color Coconut

Toasting coconut enhances the flavor of the coconut and gives it an attractive appearance. It is surprisingly easy to toast and color your own coconut at home.

What you will need to toast the coconut

  • Shredded coconut
  • Baking pan or microwave safe pan or plate

To make toasted coconut in oven

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (149°C).
  2. Spread coconut out in an ungreased shallow baking pan.
  3. Place pan uncovered in oven.
  4. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring often until golden brown.

To make toasted coconut in microwave

  1. Spread 1 cup flaked coconut in a flameproof glass pie pan or paper plate.
  2. Microwave, uncovered, at HIGH power 2 minutes; stir and microwave 3 to 4 minutes longer, stirring every minute, until evenly golden.

What you will need to color the coconut

  • Shredded coconut
  • Liquid or gel food coloring
  • Toothpick
  • Plastic resealable sandwich or pint storage bag

To make color coconut

  1. Place coconut in plastic bag.
  2. Dip a toothpick in food color. Stir coconut with toothpick to remove coloring.
  3. Close bag and knead until color is distributed evenly.
  4. Add more color and knead coconut until color is the desired intensity.
