How to Make Baking Powder
Don't have baking powder on hand? Or just want to make it yourself? It is easy and only takes about 1 minute to make.
Many bake goods require baking powder--cakes, coffee cakes, biscuits, muffins, quick breads, and some cookies. Substituting baking soda for baking powder can produce less than desirable results. Making baking powder requires using only two common ingredients: baking soda and cream of tartar.
What you will need to make baking powder
- Baking soda
- Cream of tartar
To make 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- Place 1 teaspoon baking soda and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar into a small bowl.
- Mix until thoroughly combined; use right away.
Tips for making baking powder
- It is best to mix up only as much as needed for the moment. To store it, add a teaspoon of corn starch make sure to keep it tightly sealed in an airtight container.
