Cleaning Canning Jar Rims

Before placing hot lids on the filled jars, thoroughly wipe the jar rims, inside the top edge of the jar and the outside screw threads with a clean, damp cloth to dissolve and remove any spilled food particles.

Either a lint-free cloth towel or paper towel works well for cleaning the jars. Do not use a sponge to wipe the jar rims since sponges can harbor harmful bacteria and tiny food particles that could contaminate the preserved food. Particles of food remaining on the rim of a jar can prevent a vacuum seal.
