Baked Ham and Apples

This recipe is great if you use real smoked ham with no water added. The flavor is especially sweet and buttery.


6 to 8 servings


2 bone-in center-cut fully cooked ham slices (1/2 inch thick and 1 pound
2 teaspoons ground mustard
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 medium tart apples
2 tablespoons butter
pepper to taste


Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C).

Place ham in an ungreased 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Rub with mustard and sprinkle with brown sugar. Core apples and cut into 3/4-inch slices; arrange in a single layer over ham. Dot with butter and sprinkle with pepper.

Cover and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 325°F (163°C); bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 minutes longer or until a meat reads 140°F (60°C).
