Make your own colored sugars and save yourself some money over the holiday season. This recipe is easy and can be kept in the jars for months.
1 cup granulated (white) sugar
liquid food color or gel icing color
When using liquid food coloring: Place sugar into a jar with a tight fitting lid. Drip 2 drops of the food coloring onto the sugar, close the lid, and shake vigorously for about 1 minute. Adjust color with additional food coloring and repeat if the color is too light.
When using gel icing color: Place sugar into a jar with a tight fitting lid. Insert a clean toothpick into the gel icing color then swirl the toothpick into the sugar. Discard toothpick. Close lid and shake vigorously for about 1 minute. Add additional toothpickfuls of gel if color is too light.
You can use a resealable plastic bag in place of the jar. Instead of shaking the bag, just knead the contents until color is evenly distributed.
